Yoga Teacher Training Intensive Course

Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Modular Course

This 200-hour course will begin in September 2018 and run over 18 days. The course is designed so that you have a full immersion into your learning and practice. The course will be hard work and packed with information and practical work so you will value the month afterwards before you submit your final written assessments as an opportunity to absorb your new learning and understanding.

The course dates for 2018 are provisionally 23rd September to 7th October.

Pre-Requisites

  • Prospective students must have at least 2 years’ prior experience of yoga. If you attend a weekly class or two, that is fine, provided that you have a love of the practice and the right attitude to learning. While your own practice will be transformed over the 9 months, this training is not about teaching you yoga but instead about teaching you to become a great teacher.
  • If you do not already have this prior experience you may wish to attend some of my workshops in order to increase your knowledge and experience. Ultimately though you will only give as a teacher from the experience base you have and it is worth waiting a little long before applying for teacher training in order to gain the most from the course and subsequently give the most as a teacher.
  • Students must attend a suitable yoga class for the duration of the course.

Course Content

What are our Core Subject Areas? My courses adhere to the strict standards and guidelines set by Yoga Alliance Professionals. I include a practical and theory based approach throughout the course and encourage questions and discussions throughout our time together.

The course includes:

  • Yoga asana
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pranayama
  • Subtle anatomy
  • Yoga philosophy
  • Meditation and relaxation
  • The basics of Ayurveda
  • Living the 8 limbs of yoga
  • Teaching methods and ethics
  • The business of yoga
  • Home study and self-practice

Personal Practice

We will work with principles of alignment. These include both energetic and physical alignment directions that apply to poses. The first days are dedicated to you and your practice and understanding of these principles in order that you incorporate them into your practise. Then we move on to teaching skills.

Pranayama

Depending on what style of yoga you have been exposed to, you may or may not have been introduced to various breathing techniques. Pranayama will be part of our daily practice.

Philosophy

We will study the ancient writings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and look at yoga lifestyle and ethics of yoga teaching.

Teaching skills we will cover:

  • Creating a class plan and sequencing
  • Observation and adjustments
  • Modifications
  • Voicing
  • Directionality and clear instructions
  • Contra-indications and alternatives
  • Safety
  • Restorative practice
  • Pregnancy as a special case

Yoga anatomy

  • How to teach it to students appropriately and usefully to aid their practice
  • We will look at the body structures relative to our yoga practice. The focus will be on the skeletal system and the muscular system as well as subtle anatomy.
  • First Aid For Yoga Teachers

Assessments

  • Instead of a formal final exam a process of continuous assessment will run throughout the course. After each assessment students must display that they have taken on board the feedback and development advice. Any areas requiring an ability to demonstrate a level of competence are based on an ability to evidence the competence ‘more often than not’. Feedback and advice will given after each assessment.
  • A practical assessment in which you plan and teach three yoga classes:
    • 1 x 30 min
    • 1 x 45 min
    • 1 x 60 min
  • A written paper on each of the following:
    • The role of the yoga teacher
    • Anatomy and physiology as it relates to Yoga
    • Yoga for a Special Population Group
    • Individual Teaching Philosophy
